The Language Pole

The series of works depicting the creation of the Language Pole began during the Spring of 2021. Shortly after moving to Port Alberni situated on Vancouver Island, the artist met with, and felt welcomed in the observation of the process of carving the pole. The incredible process evolved through the Spring and Summer resulting in many photographic opportunities and the richness of observing the process at length. The carvers featured in the series gave permission for their personal inclusion in the series of works.

The artist learned that the pole is made from a wind fallen cedar tree and shows eleven relatives of nature. Represented are raven, seen at the top of the pole, followed by moon, sun, sea, sky, earthquake, the 1st man and woman, and grizzly bear. ( not in the correct order ) The head carver, Tim Paul, is a high profile and experienced carver. Many moons ago the artist used to observe him carving at the Provincial Museum in Victoria BC. She related that it felt amazing to see him, 40 years later, directing the work on this pole.

The Language Pole was transported, on September 17th 2021 to it’s permanent site on the banks of the Somas River. The celebration in honour of the pole took place the following day on the 18th of September. The artist attended both events.

The celebration was moving. As Bald Eagles flew overhead, Tim Paul released the pole from it’s shroud. The Eagles arrived unexpectedly but their timing felt like a spiritual event. Numerous indigenous leaders spoke about the pole, the most memorable words came from Tim Paul, who

spoke about the symbolic qualities of the pole. The artist quotes “ The Pole stands as mother for lost children to come home.” The times are difficult as we in Canada consider the dire need for Truth and Reconciliation. This pole takes a significant place both symbolically and appears as a wonderful work of art.
